Akhtam Dzhalilov is Professor of Mathematics at Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent, where he has held a permanent position since 2012, and concurrently Professor at the National University of Uzbekistan since 2013. He earned his M.Sc. (1979) and Ph.D. (1987) in Physics & Mathematics from Moscow State University. In 2000 he received the Doctor of Sciences degree from the Institute of Mathematics, Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, in Tashkent.
His research lies at the intersection of ergodic theory, renormalization, and the analysis of low-dimensional dynamical systems. He is best known for a sustained programme on circle homeomorphisms with break points — maps that are smooth except for a jump in their first derivative at finitely many points. The invariant measures of such maps are singular with respect to Lebesgue measure, and their conjugacy theory and renormalization behaviour have been the subject of numerous papers, including extensions of Herman’s theorem and notes on a theorem of Katznelson and Ornstein.
Before joining Turin Polytechnic he was Head and Professor of the Department of Probability and Mathematical Statistics at Samarkand State University (2005–2012). He has held research fellowships supported by the Royal Society (England), DAAD (Germany), the German Research Foundation (DFG), TÜBİTAK (Turkey), the Abdus Salam ICTP (Italy), the Politecnico di Torino, and a Fulbright Visiting Scholarship at Stony Brook University in 2011/2012.
He served as Senior Associate of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) from 2015 to 2021, and is a member of the Uzbek Mathematical Union.
